At its April meeting, the Session unanimously voted to become a Matthew 25 congregation. This originated with PC(USA) as a call to congregations and parishioners to be actively engaged in the world around us. It is a way to strengthen and reenergize our own faith, and also be a more engaged and relevant church in the changing world. Matthew 25:31-46 is the familiar scripture passage where Jesus teaches us to care for "the least of these."
Jesus said, “for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”
(Matthew 25:35-36 NRSV)
Becoming a Matthew 25 congregation urges us to truly be the hands and feet of Jesus in our community and in the world. The Presbyterian Church (USA) has three foci to help individual congregations become a church of action where God’s love, justice and mercy are spread. New Hope has chosen to adopt all three. The three foci are; 1) building congregational vitality 2) dismantling structural racism and 3) eradicating systemic poverty. New Hope has already implemented programs and missions in all three categories, but the goal is to ensure all committees are working together toward this larger mission. If you have any questions, please contact Elders Tracy Grundy or Rick Cassetta. You can also read more about the Matthew 25 initiative here.
